Τhe Island of SANTORINI

Presentation-Tourism Business Data

Part of the Cyclades Island Group, Santorini, officially known as Thira (a name that encompasses the volcanic islets within Santorini’s orbit) sits in the Aegean Sea, roughly halfway between Athens and Crete. The capital of the island is Fira.
Being a top destination of Greece, holidays in Santorini is the dream of a lifetime for millions of tourists around the World. The island is famous for the impressive Caldera, the Volcano, the traditional Architecture and its fascinating Sunset. The Caldera and the whole cluster of Santorini islands have been characterized as an area of outstanding natural beauty.
Whether Visitors are looking to relax on the beach, explore ancient villages, check out volcanoes or enjoy world famous wine straight from the source, holidays in Santorini are the ideal choice.

THE ISLAND’S INFRASTRUCTURE

The island of Santorini has an excellent tourist infrastructure. The medical services of the Island are offered by the Central Clinic of Santorini, located in Fira. It is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. There is also a plenty of sport facilities for different activities. Lastly, the Island contains a fairly good cable network. Internet is also available via dial up connections and ADSL. Mobile telephony covers even the most remote part of the island.

ROAD NETWORK

Santorini has a friendly driving environment. There are free parking areas all over the island and gas stations all along the road network. Two important projects for the island municipality will be completed soon. The first one concerning road network protection from the Port of Athinio to the Town of Fira and the second one covering the wider area of the Funicular from the Town of Fira to the Old Port of Fira.

CONNECTION WITH MEANS OF TRANSPORTATION-PORTS-AIRPORTS

Apart from the Old Port of Fira, the main commercial Port of Santorini is the Athinio Port which is located in the area of Pyrgos and offers car access. Its distance from Piraeus is 128 miles, from Iraklion Crete 68 miles and from Rhodes 147 miles.
The central bus station is in Fira, the capital of the Island, where buses depart very frequently. Cruises and excursion boats depart from the old port of Fira, also known as the port of Gialos, while ferries depart from the port of Athinio, 8 km south of Fira.
Santorini International Airport is located north of the village of Kamari. There are regular flights from Athens by Olympic Airways and, Aegean Airlines as well as charters from many European Towns. Flight duration from Athens to Santorini is approximately 30 minutes.

TOURING AROUND THE ISLAND

Apart from using private vehicles in order to travel around the Island, visitors are able to use local Public Means of Transport, such as Buses which operate routes to the rest of the island. Local Buses cover routes to almost all places around the island and certainly to the most tourist spots. There are also daily excursion boats from the old port of Fira to the volcano, the hot springs and the small island of Thirassia.

ΤΟURISM DEVELOPMENT

With two million visitors arriving each year — or nearly 10 percent of the total number of tourist arrivals for the whole country — as well as frequent first-place rankings in surveys of favorite holiday destinations, the Greek island of Santorini has emerged as one of the top tourism destinations worldwide.
The Island is expecting another bumper tourism year by extending the season across more months. Last year the Cycladic Island enjoyed one of the highest growth rates in arrivals among Greek resorts: Air arrivals from abroad expanded by 27 percent year-on-year to reach 310,433, outperforming the yearly growth rate seen around the country (15.4 percent) in 2014. The Greek island was visited by a total of 790,000 cruise guests in 2015. Sometimes as many as 10,000 tourists come ashore from ships in a day.

The basic objective is the Hotel Unit to attract demanding customers at domestic and mostly at international level.
